Romero Center Ministries

Based in Camden, NJ, Romero Center Ministries provides Catholic education and retreat experiences inspired by Saint Oscar Romero’s prophetic witness.

“My time at the Romero Center grew my faith and broadened my perception of the world around me to levels that I never thought it would and gave me experiences that I will never forget” -Jake Kiggans, Urban Challenge Participant.

The Urban Challenge

The Urban Challenge Program is an urban, service-learning, immersion experience rooted in the Catholic faith tradition. Offering a point of access to the lives and stories of the people of Camden, NJ, and its surrounding communities, the Urban Challenge Program is a unique educational and retreat opportunity that helps its participants to gain an understanding of urban poverty, its causes, and the many issues that people living in these communities confront every day of their lives. Issues such as hunger, abandonment, unemployment, violence, lack of quality education, lack of affordable housing, and homelessness.

“The Urban Challenge forces you out of your comfort zone.  Anytime you do that, you grow as a person.  You also realize how important it is to actually serve people in need.  I believe that the program continuously changes and improves.  In the five times that I have come, the staff does a great job mixing it up.”

-Chaperone, Fordham Prep (NY)

The Rostro de Cristo Partnership

We are excited to share with you about our new partnership with Rostro de Cristo, an organization that, like the Romero Center, lives Christ's Gospel by providing transformative service immersion opportunities.  Rostro de Cristo young adult volunteers typically spend one to two years living in small communities in Ecuador working with marginalized children, adults and families.  With the Covid-19 pandemic, their volunteers weren't able to travel to Ecuador, so they partnered with us to continue to live out both of our missions in a new way. Romero Center Ministries is hosting four long-term volunteers who live at the center and work at the service sites that our short-term volunteers have supported for many years.  Welcome Sophie, Maggie, Ellen, and Ashley!!

We seek personal, communal, and societal transformation by living ministry as proclaimed in Christ’s Gospel.

“I can’t. You must. I’m yours. Show me the way”

-Saint Oscar Romero
